Ernst's Variations on "The Last Rose of Summer"

This piece by Ernst is so difficult that not too many people play live in concert these days.  I will write more after the concert next week!  Can't wait!
The pianist is quite incredible as well!

If you want to watch this live concert, you can go to www.violin.org and find out more.  But there is a small fee for this service.

with Ju-Young Baek, 1998 Bronze Medalist, South Korea

March 11 — 7:30 PM

Ju-Young Baek is known for electrifying performances during extensive solo engagements in many of the world's cultural centers. In 2005, she was appointed the youngest violin faculty member in history of the Seoul National University. A recent review in the Longmont, Colorado Times-Call stated that Ms. Baek is "...a young violinist whose scintillating pyrotechnics and sensitive musicality left the audience breathless." Joining her will be Akira Eguchi, known to Indianapolis audiences as one of the IVCI's official accompanists. Mr. Eguchi has performed and recorded with many of the world's leading violin soloists. His recent performing work has captured the attention of audiences and critics worldwide.

Ms. Baek and Mr. Eguchi have scheduled a balanced program opening with the rarely-played Janácek Violin Sonata and a repertoire staple by Brahms, his Violin Sonata in A Major. A vivacious and virtuosic second half includes Wieniawski's Scherzo-Tarantella and Capriccio-Valse, the fiendishly difficult "Moses" Variations by Paganini and Variations on "The Last Rose of Summer" by Ernst

Program notes on Variations on The Last Rose of Summer for solo violin

阿辽沙:  You probably have already found out that it's free when you listen to it online.  Downloading does cost money here.  However, the Ernst's piece is not available at this time because the performer was not fully satisfied with her performance so it was not posted on the website.

Program notes written by Cathleen Partlow Strauss:

Heinrich Ernst (1814-1865):  Variations on The Last Rose of Summer for solo violin

Moravian violinist Heinrich Ernst inherited the mantle from Paganini of being the most acclaimed violinst of his time famous for his technique and stage charisma.  Also a composer who wrote works for his own use, The Last Rose is the final study from his set of Six Polyphonic Etudes for unaccompanied violin.  These pieces represented the pinnacle of violin technique.

The piece opens with a short introduction and then introduces the theme, based on an Irish air, accompanied by left-hand pizzicatos.  Four variations follow highlighting double-stops, string crossings, quick full-handed chords and harmonics.  A Finale featuring break-neck scales ends the seemingly insurmountable gymnastic feat.
